Dealing With Educational Disparity

Our classroom setup continues to be dominated by course books, recitations, lectures, and instructions. It is time to inculcate new educational tools that offer alternative approaches to class work, homework, and student – teacher interaction.
It calls for a unanimous acceptance that the sheer inequality of income and wealth has had deleterious effects on our society. This inequality thrives on the powerful influence of different circumstances, including gender, racial, ethnic and regional factors, which play a detrimental role in allowing for opportunities of education and life for many across the world.
The bias is so widespread that the affluent enjoy the best health care, education, and all benefits of wealth. As a matter of fact, economic, cultural, and social differences collectively preserve privilege across generations. It reflects in the successful schooling of students from privileged background as compared to those who we call represent the “mass”.
The signs that we would like to see bring change in economic inequalities affecting schooling today seem modest. Policymakers devote public resources to educating poor over rich but they also acknowledge the unfair nature of unequal school financing across school districts. In a structure like this, the disparity in educational resources comes as no surprise. It is complicated to redress this inequality, so long as the severe inequality in wealth, income and power persists in our society.
More than 25% of all children in 18 countries have never been to primary school, according to the latest statistics released by the World Inequality Database on Education (WIDE).
The need is to control the increasing inequality of opportunity, to which educational inequality makes a great contribution, as well as an unfair policy structure that favors the prosperous. To reduce the gap in education and achievement rests on the policies that emphasize a cut down in inequality and promote developing new initiatives that target the socioeconomic as well as gender factors.
Gender disparity needs to be controlled in our typical family set up where the son almost always gets special care and attends private schools whereas the girl is sent to government school. It is imperative for the schools to maintain a balance for student enrollment where they give equal seats to girl students and so should the parents follow.
While the rate of enrollment for primary education by students classified under the “minority” tab has nearly reached parity over the past few decades, the rates of college enrollment and completion remain a far destination. Racial differences in educational achievement mirror the conditions outside school far more than those inside, which, in turn, signifies the need of education to restore equality.
There is also a need to modify the structure and the process of schooling that has remained largely unchanged. Irrespective of various experiments, the structure of schooling remains status quo with a classroom embodied by children who look up to a teacher who typically reads to them from textbook or writes on the chalkboard. Our classroom set up continues to be dominated by course books, recitations, lectures, and instructions. It is time to inculcate new educational tools that offer alternative approaches to class work, homework, and student -teacher interaction.
These measures aim to promote and achieve equality of opportunity through education and will ensure a more equal distribution of the determinants of well being across society.
