THE JHARU SWEEP: It’s Paanch Saal Kejriwal

Creating history in Delhi, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 67 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2015. The landslide victory of AAP is the greatest success achieved by any political party in the electoral history of India. Though the exit poll results hinted on AAP closing to a majority mark, it failed to realise the wave of votes that went in favour of the two-year-old party. Two major national parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) have been completely decimated in the national capital.

a1In an election that was billed by the opposition as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the AAP wave knocked the two major parties down. The BJP leaders accepted the defeat as a major ‘setback’. The humiliation was complete with its chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi losing in Krishna Nagar which is regarded as the party’s stronghold.

Riding high on his party’s massive victory, Arvind Kejriwal was sworn in as Delhi’s chief minister, on Saturday. The activist-turned-politician addressed the large gathering at an open-air show ground chanting patriotic slogans and said, “We have confidence to remove corruption from Delhi during our five year tenure.”
